Burnout 101
+ How Adaptogens Help

The HPA Axis: Your Body’s Stress Control Center

Our body’s stress response revolves around a network of hormone-producing glands called the HPA axis, which stands for the hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal glands. When we face physical or mental stress, the hypothalamus and pituitary glands release hormones that stimulate the adrenal glands. These adrenal glands then produce stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which create a feedback loop to regulate the stress response.

How Chronic Stress Affects the HPA Axis

When stress is constant, this system can get overworked, leading to issues with adrenal function. In cases of burnout or fatigue, the adrenal glands become less responsive to signals from the hypothalamus and pituitary, making it harder for the body to manage stress effectively.

Chronic stress is now recognized as a major cause of HPA axis imbalance. So, while it is incredibly important to address habits (including mental ones) that lead to chronic stress, there are herbs that can also support your body in changing its response and relation to stress.

How Adaptogens Help

Adaptogens are herbs and mushrooms that help the body resist the negative effects of stress. They work by interacting with the HPA axis to help prevent excessive hormone release from the hypothalamus and pituitary, thus improving adrenal function.

Beyond just balancing stress responses, adaptogens often boost energy, metabolism, and immune function, providing mood-lifting benefits and even increasing stamina.

Herbs you can feel

Ashwagandha Root

Botanical Name: Asparagus racemosus

In Ayurvedic medicine, Ashwagandha is classified as a Rasayana, or rejuvenating herb. Known for its effects on anxiety, depression, stress, and insomnia, it is one of the most extensively studied herbs. Clinical trials consistently show significant improvements in stress markers, energy levels, and mitochondrial health, likely due to its modulation of the HPA axis and GABA receptors, alongside its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Cordyceps

Botanical Name: Cordyceps militaris

Cordyceps, a key herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is known for its potent effects on energy, physical performance, immune function, and anti-aging. Research shows that Cordyceps enhances mitochondrial function, increasing ATP production and improving oxygen uptake and utilization; leading to enhanced power output and a resistance to fatigue. Additionally, as an adaptogen, Cordyceps helps the body adjust to stress by regulating cortisol levels and supporting overall resilience, promoting balance in both physical and mental stress responses.

Eleuthero Root

Botanical Name: Eleutherococcus senticosus

Eleuthero, a potent adaptogen originating from Siberia, has been extensively studied for its performance-enhancing properties, particularly in the USSR during the 1950s. Research has shown that Eleuthero directly impacts the regulation of genes involved in adaptive stress-response pathways, which may help protect against stress-related disorders. Additionally, Eleuthero interacts directly with the adrenal glands to regulate hormone production, reducing the production of cortisol.

Eleuthero’s ability to modulate stress is complemented by its impact on physical stamina and endurance. Clinical trials with athletes have shown it to improve glucose uptake and metabolism in muscle cells. Additionally, the presence of syringin, lignans, and sesamin in Eleuthero contributes to its immune-boosting effects. Both human and animal studies have consistently demonstrated Eleuthero’s antioxidant activity, which further enhances its adaptogenic benefits.

He Shou Wu Root

Botanical Name: Polygonum multiflorum

He Shou Wu, a foundational herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is renowned for its rejuvenating and longevity-enhancing properties. Traditionally used to support vitality, hair health, and anti-aging, it is also believed to nourish the kidneys and liver. Research suggests He Shou Wu exhibits strong antioxidant activity, promoting cellular health and protecting against oxidative stress. As an adaptogen, He Shou Wu helps the body manage stress and maintain balance, making it a powerful ally in promoting overall well-being and vitality.

Licorice Root

Botanical Name: Glycyrrhiza glabra

Licorice is often used in traditional herbal formulas, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine, to harmonize and enhance the effects of other herbs. While it is not classified as an adaptogen, licorice has a balancing and moderating influence on herbal blends, helping to reduce potential harsh effects and improve overall synergy within the formula.

Schisandra Berry

Botanical Name: Schisandra chinensis

Schisandra berry, the first herb recognized as an adaptogen, has been researched for decades for its impact on physical and mental performance. Studies in the USSR after World War II revealed Schisandra’s potential to lift energy, mood, and physical activity, particularly in individuals experiencing depression. Additionally, since 1979, Schisandra has also been a primary ingredient in ADAPT-232, a Scandinavian herbal blend valued for its ability to manage symptoms of fatigue, weakness, and reduced performance during times of stress.

Its adaptogenic properties are attributed to its diverse phytochemical profile, with over 200 compounds identified, which contribute to its central nervous system-stimulating and fatigue-relieving effects.  Schisandra is especially effective at restoring energy and normalizing sleep patterns in cases of chronic fatigue, making it a key ally in strengthening resilience to stress.

Shatavari Root

Botanical Name: Asparagus racemosus

Shatavari, directly translated from Sanskrit as “woman with 1000 husbands”, is well-documented in Ayurvedic, Chinese, and Greek medicine, primarily as a rejuvenating tonic. Its wide variety of bioactive compounds has been thoroughly researched in both clinical and preclinical trials, showcasing a broad spectrum of therapeutic effects, including adaptogenic, libidinal, neuroprotective, immunomodulatory, and antidepressant properties, as well as various benefits for female reproductive health. One example of a powerful bioactive compound within Shatavari is racemosol, a compound shown to have potent anti-inflammatory properties.
